The Reindersmeer, near the former lock in the Bosserheide in Well, was declared the most beautiful lake in the Netherlands in 2020. And rightly so! The lake with crystal clear, azure blue water surrounded by trees and low vegetation is reminiscent of Scandinavia. The area forms the ideal starting point for a walk through De Maasduinen National Park.

Compensation for Nature

The Leukermeer and Seurenheide day beach were created between 1960 and 1970, due to the excavation of millions of tons of sand and gravel for the concrete industry. In 1971, excavations of the Bergerheide led to the creation of the Reindersmeer. It was then decided not to further excavate the Bergerheide, partly due to protests from environmental movements. To compensate for the lost natural value, the Reindersmeer, 45 meters deep and 130 hectares in size, was designed in an eco-friendly manner. Nature now takes center stage around the crystal-clear lake.

An important, natural link

The banks of the Reindersmeer are covered with heather, grass, mosses, and other plants. The lake and its surrounding area form an important, natural link between the Bergerheide and the estate and nature reserve De Hamert. It is especially good for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. Those looking for more water fun like fishing and swimming can head to the Leukermeer and day beach Seurenheide. You can picnic or relax by the water.

A unique visitor center

The Maasduinen visitor center is not built on or in the ground, but literally hangs above the water. It is built in the old lock chamber that connects the Reindersmeer with the Leukermeer. The building itself and the view over the lake are more than worth a visit. Anyone who wants to learn more about Maasduinen National Park and the various hiking routes will find all the necessary information there.
