Where boundaries fade and silence prevails
Nature does not think or grow within boundaries, and you notice that in Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. This area, on both sides of the Belgian-Dutch border, covers no less than 6,000 hectares. The great diversity in landscape makes the area limitless and endless; heath, fens, forests, dunes, meadows, and polder alternate. The ecological and cultural-historical values are significant. Think of the striking height differences of the Brabantse Wal, the shifting sands in De Nol, or the impressive estate with park forest of Ravenhof and Moretusbos. Moreover, the area is officially a cross-border silence area. The vastness of the Kalmthoutse Heide has been a source of inspiration for artists for years. Also for you?
Three-Star Quiet Area
Here you will find one of the largest contiguous heathland areas of Flanders and the Netherlands. The Border Park is part of the Natura 2000 network that sustainably protects the most important natural areas throughout Europe. Species like the nightjar, smooth snake, and woodlark find their peace here. And the same goes for people. This three-star quiet area offers you a low-stimulus and exceptionally healthy experience; and that's just a half-hour drive from hectic urban life. As soon as you step into the heathland, the vast silence overwhelms you, and you only hear the sounds of nature. Sssssst.
Blurring of Boundaries
The area literally and figuratively blurs boundaries. The many walking, cycling, and equestrian routes continuously, but almost imperceptibly, cross the Belgian-Dutch border. The diverse landscapes invite meditation and forest bathing. But a good hike through the wild nature or an intensive mountain bike route also helps to clear your mind and make daily worries fade away.
Traces of a Rich History
The landscapes of Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide bear the traces of a rich history. In the past, they served as a stage for wars, border conflicts, and defense lines. The remnants of these can still be seen in the landscape. For instance, in bunkers, forts, and trenches.
For centuries, humans have worked and lived in harmony with this landscape. Through heathland management, including sheep grazing, humans contribute to the preservation of this valuable environment. The ever-changing climate has also left its mark on the landscape, from polar desert to shifting sands and elevation differences (which are clearly visible at the steep edge of the Brabantse Wal).
The geological transitions in this area make the Kalmthoutse Heide and the Brabantse Wal part of the Flemish-Dutch Schelde Delta Geopark.
