Whoever is looking for adventure and activity on Texel is in the right place at the Dunes of Texel National Park. A large network of walking, cycling, and riding trails runs through the most beautiful landscape types. And who said the Netherlands is flat? In the dune area south of the Koog, you take on the challenge: there you walk up the highest dune of Texel, which is 24.8 meters high. The reward for your hard work follows in a stunning view over the National Park.
The Seetingsnollen or the Seeting is the dune area south of De Koog, between Ruijslaan in the east and the beach entrance of pole 17. Nol is Tesselian for high dune and Seeting is a corruption of Form Ceetingh, a Texelaar who owned several plots of land behind the dunes in the 17th century.
Feast Your Eyes
In 360 degrees, a diverse landscape unfolds at the top. You look out over coniferous forests, heath, and slopes. In spring, the slopes are full of plants such as the sand rose, the dune violet, the little rattle, feather-tail moss, and the mouse ear. Throughout the year, many bird species can be found here, such as the hen harrier, wheatear, meadow pipit, nightingale, and the linnet songbird.
Near De Koog, blue sea holly brightens the beachside of the sea dune. Did you know that there used to be a railway here? Used during WWII by the Germans to transport building materials and supplies for the construction of the Atlantic Wall.
(Bird) Excursions
