Starring: sheep! They play an important role in keeping the dunes open and therefore healthy in the Loonse and Drunense Duinen, part of Van Gogh National Park. You can meet them together with the shepherd and dog during a walk with the ranger. Observe the interaction between sheep, shepherd, and dog and see how they work together to reach the right place. A fascinating event! Together with the ranger, you walk to the flock of sheep, which is always in a different location in the area. Once there, the shepherd will tell you all about his ancient profession and the sheep.
Fascinating spectacle
The sheep moving under the command of the shepherd is fascinating. A unique experience in a fantastic drifting sand landscape. You experience up close how the shepherd and the flock have played a role for decades in shaping the landscape of the Loonse and Drunense Dunes.
Kempian Heath Sheep
The flock of Kempian heath sheep ensures that the area does not become overgrown with shrubs and trees. This helps preserve the open and unique landscape with its characteristic animal and plant species. The Kempian heath sheep is an authentic Dutch breed that can withstand drought and easily grazes on the sparse heath. The sheep stands high on its legs, is medium-sized, and has a stately posture.
“Wonderful to experience the life of the shepherd and his flock for a few hours. It made me feel very calm. I also heard and saw why nature management with sheep is incredibly important."
Ranger José
Good to know
The walk with the forester usually starts at the Bosch en Duin parking lot, Schoorstraat 50 in Udenhout. But not always, because the departure point depends on where the herd is located in the park at that time. Other starting points are De Roestelberg in Kaatsheuvel or the Rustende Jager in Udenhout. You will be informed in advance of a different departure location.
Tips:
- Wear sturdy hiking shoes.
- Dress according to the weather.
- Always check yourself for ticks afterward.

Stay at the Sheepfold
At the edge of the Loonse and Drunense Dunes lies the Recreation Company De Schaapskooi. You can camp there or stay in one of the holiday homes or group accommodations. An ideal place for nature lovers, those seeking tranquility, hikers, cyclists, and mountain bikers. From your caravan, camper, or tent, you can walk right into the national park.
