In the De Hoge Veluwe National Park, located between the Gelderland towns of Otterlo and Hoenderloo, lies the Sint Hubertus hunting lodge, the former country residence of the Kröller-Müller couple. It is one of the most iconic buildings in the Netherlands, designed by Berlage. The distinctive features make the building special: extreme geometric precision, natural stone elements, glazed tiles, coffered ceilings, and integrated 'applied art'. Everything is meticulously recorded. Berlage believed that any disturbance or concession detracts from the whole.
English Inspiration
Berlage inspired the Hunting Lodge on the English country house. This can be seen in the special rooms for each family member, as well as the library, smoking room, boudoirs, and the billiard room. The same goes for the V-shape of the building. The characteristic tower of the Hunting Lodge does not fit with that. The designer built this tower at the request of the Kröller-Müller couple, who wanted a wide view of the surroundings.
Gesamtkunstwerk; where everything comes together
In addition to the hunting lodge, Berlage designed the complete interior, down to the cutlery. The nearby park with a large pond was also his design. As well as a bridge over an extension of the pond. All together, the hunting lodge makes a so-called Gesamtkunstwerk; a work that unites all forms of art.
The Kröller-Müller couple used the hunting lodge mainly as a retreat from 1920 onwards. Only in the last phase of their lives did they live there permanently.
