Masterpiece Dutch Landscape

The audio route National Park De Weerribben-Wieden is the fourth in the series Masterpiece Dutch Landscape, developed for the theme year Ode to the Landscape. You can download the app in the Google Play Store or App Store. Next month, another audio route will follow, featuring a different national park. In this way, we are putting Dutch national parks in the spotlight this year. Both the beauty and contemporary issues of management and development are addressed during these special cycling routes.

The route

Will you join me to this water-rich land of fens and ridges, of meadows and reed fields, of quays, channels, and dikes?

This cycling route takes you from Ossenzijl to Baarlo, Blankenham, and Kuinre. You follow a route of cycling junctions that is about 38 kilometers long and where you mostly ride on separate bike paths.

De Weerribben, together with De Wieden, forms the largest fen area in Western Europe. Characteristic of this area are the lakes and ponds with water soldiers and fountain herbs, floating fens, and swamps. You will find bluegrasslands, large reed fields, and marsh forests to explore. Due to the diversity of nature, many rare plants and animals live here, such as the large copper butterfly which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. A pair of binoculars is definitely recommended!

Get to know this wet peat landscape through the eyes of painters such as Anton Mauve, Paul Gabriel, and Vincent van Gogh, and contemporary photographers like Patrick Nijhuis and Han Singels.
