Do you want to explore the Southwest of Drenthe by bike?

Seen through the eyes of the painters of the past and contemporary photographers? Then download the new app ‘Masterpiece Dutch Landscape’ with unique cycling routes like the audio route National Park Dwingelderveld. This is approximately 40 km long, where you mostly cycle on separate bike paths.

Masterpiece Dutch Landscape

The audio route National Park Dwingelderveld is the fifth in the series Masterpiece Dutch Landscape, developed for the theme year Ode to the Landscape. You can download the app in the Google Play Store or App Store. Next month, there will be another audio route, each featuring a different national park. In this way, we are putting the Dutch national parks in the spotlight this year. Both the beauty and the contemporary issues of management and development are addressed during these special cycling routes.

Wet contiguous heathland

The Dwingelderveld National Park in Southwest Drenthe is the largest contiguous wet heathland in Western Europe. Wet valleys and dry sand ridges alternate. This provides a lot of variety in plant growth and animal life. Two sheep herds with shepherds maintain the heath. Because people have intervened only limitedly in this area, Dwingelderveld has been able to preserve its nutrient-poor and moist character. These conditions also contribute to the fact that you can encounter rare and endangered plants and animals in this area. In addition, you can enjoy an endless, undisturbed horizon in this national park.

The route

Join us in this land of extremes: through drifting sand dunes, past fens and manor houses, past ponds and kettle holes and through forests and heathlands.

This cycling route starts at the visitor center in Spier and then goes to Ruinen, Dwingeloo, and Lhee. The route follows cycling junctions, is 39 kilometers long, and runs almost everywhere on separated bike paths.

Discover this national park through the eyes of painters such as Sientje van Mesdag-van Houten, Carl Blechen, Jan van Goyen, George Hendrik Breitner, and Willem Maris.
